Nigel has been the driving force behind Hern & Crabtree since he became Managing Director in the summer of 1998. With a wealth of experience in the property industry, Nigel saw the opportunity to breathe new life into Cardiff’s longest-standing residential estate agency—and he embraced the challenge wholeheartedly. Known for his creative flair, unique ideas, and sharp business acumen, Nigel has been instrumental in shaping Hern & Crabtree into the thriving company it is today.

Mike Baillie - Director

Mike joined Hern & Crabtree in 2012 and quickly made his mark as the Branch Manager of Llandaff. His success and leadership led to his appointment as Company Director in 2016. Mike studied Business at UWE and began his estate agency career in 2006 in Bristol before returning home to Cardiff. With experience at a large corporate agency and now Hern & Crabtree, Mike brings a perfect mix of industry expertise, marketing know-how, and even professional photography skills to the table. His ambition, creativity and passion continue to drive the company forward.

Rhodri Humphreys - Area Manager

Rhodri has been the Area Manager at Hern & Crabtree since 2015, overseeing multiple aspects of the business with expertise and care. Based in Pontcanna, Rhodri came to us with 15 years of experience at two corporate agencies including Savills. His role includes maintaining our excellent service standards, recruitment, team management, marketing and ensuring the day-to-day smooth running of the agency. With his commitment and wealth of knowledge, Rhodri is a vital part of the Hern & Crabtree family.

Owen is our friendly and driven Branch Manager of our bustling Llandaff office. Born and raised in Llandaff, Owen knows the area inside out. He started his career with a corporate agency but found his true home with Hern & Crabtree in 2013. Owen’s energy and leadership are key to the office’s success, and his vibrant personality keeps things lively and fun every day!

Joanne Shears - Office Manager

Jo, our brilliant Office Manager and Valuer, has been a cornerstone of the Llandaff office since 2013. With agency experience dating back to 1993 when she started as a “Sunday Girl,” Jo’s knowledge and local connections are second to none. Growing up in Canton and now living in Fairwater, she has strong ties to the community and Fairwater Rugby Club. Jo also doubles as our unofficial “social secretary,” organizing memorable work nights out. She’s a true gem both in and out of the office!

A valued member of Hern & Crabtree since 2011, Denise is known for her incredible efficiency and unflappable nature, even during the busiest times. She’s teased about retiring but has yet to follow through—probably because we’d never let her leave! Denise is truly the backbone of our team.

Gavin is the vibrant and charismatic Branch Manager of our lively Heath office. He joined Hern & Crabtree in 2020 from another large estate agency, bringing many years of experience and a natural flair for the industry. Known for his larger-than-life personality, Gavin is not just a seasoned agent but also a singer and entertainer, with multiple TV appearances to his name! From renovating his own property on C4’s Worst House on the Street to featuring on BBC’s Rhod Gilbert’s Work Experience and X-Ray with Lucy Owen, Gavin’s story even includes being married live on GMTV by Lorraine Kelly herself. With his passion and charm, Gavin truly brings the house down—in more ways than one!

Before coming on board, he worked as a professional freelance photographer based in Cardiff, travelling all over the UK for various projects. After a 20-year career as a digital producer, Alastair pursued his passion for photography, earning an MA in Commercial Photography from the Arts University Bournemouth. With his warm and approachable nature, Alastair instantly puts clients at ease while working his magic behind the camera, capturing stunning images of properties ready for marketing.

Refundable Holding deposit - Capped at 1 weeks rent

Security Deposit - Capped at 5 weeks rent for annual rental under £50,000, or 6 weeks rent for annual rental over £50,000

Rent - The agreed monthly rent

Changes to tenancy - Capped at £100 inc VAT

Early termination charge - Not exceeding the landlord’s financial losses

Late payment of rent - Interest of 3% above BoE base rate for each day the rent is late, once it is 14 days overdue

Replacement keys - Reasonable costs or give the tenant the option to purchase themselves

Utilities, council tax, communication services, TV Licence etc - Tenants own responsibility unless otherwise stated in contract
